Gallery Parfois is pleased to present Derek Bassey’s “Normal People”, the Nigerian artist’s inaugural solo exhibition.

Normal People offers a nuanced reflection on the consequences of “Othering”- a social process of perceiving certain groups or individuals as fundamentally different or alien. Othering often leads to marginalization, dehumanization, or exclusion - based on perceived differences from the dominant societal norm.

As a queer person who spent his formative years in Nigeria (which operates under Sharia law), to his present-day experience of living as a Canadian immigrant, Bassey reflects through art-making. His gloomy figurative paintings draw on themes of: loneliness, intimacy, and identity reconciliation.
